THE THERAPEUTIC PROCESS

Every individual is unique and while I do not believe in a one size fits all approach to therapy there are several models I primarily use. Through a collaborative effort we will work together to determine which approach or combination is best to achieve your therapeutic goals.

♦ Insight-Oriented Therapy ♦

Insight-oriented psychotherapy works out of the assumption that the better you know yourself, the better you will function. “Better functioning” includes symptom improvement and alleviation, along with improvement in your work, academic, social, romantic, and even athletic life. Insight-oriented psychotherapy strives to teach you how and why you function in the ways you do, and to clarify your motivations. It shows you that you have an internal world, and it interprets how that internal world operates. It gives you self-knowledge. Most of all, it gives you freedom.

♦ Psychodynamic Theory ♦

This approach is based on the premise that human behavior and relationships are shaped by conscious and unconscious influences.

Given that, at every point in therapy we are asking, “What does it mean that this person, with their unique history and concerns, is doing or saying this particular thing at this time?  How might their past experiences be impacting their life now?  What are the unspoken expectations and underlying beliefs that are limiting their potential for satisfaction?”

** Our conversations are designed to assist you in answering these questions **

♦ Solution Focused Therapy ♦

Solution Focused Therapy is a type of talk therapy that focuses on what clients want to achieve through therapy rather than on the problems that made them seek help. The approach does not focus on the past, but instead, focuses on the present and future. The therapist uses respectful curiosity to invite the client to envision their preferred future and then therapist and client start attending to any moves towards it whether these are small increments or large changes.

Through a collaborative effort we will work together to determine which approach or combination is best to achieve your therapeutic goals.  Many of my clients tell me that we’ve accomplished more in our first few hours than they have in years of  more traditional therapy.
